Thanasis Troboukis

Data Journalist, Documentary Producer

Thanasis Troboukis is a data journalist specializing in the development and adoption of innovative tools in investigative reporting and media production, with a strong interest in the transformation of legacy media in the age of artificial intelligence.

With twenty years of experience in broadcast news and digital media, including senior editorial roles, he was nominated for the Investigative Reporting Award of the European Press Prize for the investigation into baby trafficking between Greece and Bulgaria. He also took part in the cross-border Paradise Papers investigation, which exposed the role of offshore companies in opaque wealth transfers and tax avoidance.

As a Stavros Niarchos Foundation fellow in the LEDE Program at Columbia Journalism School, he turned to data journalism, combining investigative reporting with statistics, programming, and design. He has contributed, among other projects, to the development of journalistic applications for tracking the pandemic, monitoring property auctions, and analyzing political discourse through artificial intelligence systems.

Today, shortly before completing his BSc in Computer Science at the Hellenic Open University, he develops independent tools for transparency and accountability.

At the Data & AI Conference, Thanasis will demonstrate how AI can transform unstructured public data into powerful tools for transparency, using his latest project, FireWatch—an observatory for wildfires and public procurement related to fire prevention in Greece.
